Book Byte #128 "Strategize to Win" by Carla A. Harris
The New Way to Start Out, Step Up, or Start Over in Your Career
📣 Curious Quotes from the Author
“Staying too long at a company, especially if you remain in the same role, will eventually begin to compromise your professional platform. That platform includes your compensation, influence, and ultimately your career success. If on the other hand, the company that you are working for does make the foregoing investments to maintain its industry leading position, then you may
have an argument for working for the same company for several of the modules in your career journey.”
📚 Cognition of the Book’s Big Idea:
Set yourself up for success by developing and planning your career. Begin before you land the position and continue as you advance within the organization, developing relationships and managing change.
When you advance or change employment, insist on salary that is commensurate with your additional responsibilities, experience, and influence.
Focus on the content of your profession to equip yourself with skills and experiences that will allow you to pursue multiple careers throughout your working life. Be adaptable enough to seize possibilities as they emerge. Disruptions in technology will create occupations you had no idea existed, so stay aware and take control.
🛠️Fixing the Tech Industry
If we all took our careers more seriously and allowed us to manage them better instead of letting them happen to us, we’d all be making a lot more money and be a lot more fulfilled in our work.
So take control of what you can, and leave what you can’t control alone.
