Book Byte #157 "The New Corner Office" by Laura Vanderkam
How the Most Successful People Work from Home
📣 Curious Quote from the Author
“I have also learned—through hard experience—that there is no virtue in putting something on a to-do list and then not doing it. It’s just as not done as if it were never on the list in the first place, only now it’s sitting there, mocking me in its undoneness.”
“A January 2020 Gallup survey on remote work found that people working off-site 60–80 percent of the time were more likely than other workers to feel engaged, and to feel that someone was watching out for their development.”
Cognition of the Book’s Big Idea:
Although there are some employers who are dubious about their staff working from home, there are several benefits. Working remotely may still be productive, connected, and ambitious if basic habits like developing a daily routine and checking in with coworkers are maintained.
You can make remote work beneficial for both you and your business if you make the right office equipment purchases and plan your days according to tasks rather than time. Take short trips. There is a drawback to working from home: the days are typically less varied. Make a conscious effort to incorporate tiny trips into your calendar to add a little excitement. Try something new a couple of times a week. It might be as easy as trying out a new cuisine or going for a stroll through an uncharted neighborhood. It will keep things a little more interesting because of the novelty.
🛠️Fixing the Tech Industry
Remote Work was made for the Tech Industry, and the Tech Industry was made for Remote Work. With the advent of the Internet and us being the early adopters of said internet, gaming and chatting with each other on AOL Instant Messenger, it felt a very natural bridge to being able to do great work while not in the office most days.
However, it will take longer, even with the pandemic in the rearview mirror to make sure that most jobs can be made to work remotely. Restaurants and Retail Stores being the exception, I predict we’ll see more jobs go remote than ones that stay in a cubicle.
