Book Byte #158 "Living in Flow" by Sky Nelson-Isaacs
The Science of Synchronicity and How Your Choices Shape Your World
đŁ Curious Quote from the Author
âThe theory I will present, based on some well-established science as well as some new science and some speculative ideas, states that the universe is neither friendly, hostile, nor indifferent to us. Rather, it is responsive. We live in a cosmos that responds to our actions by bringing us more of the same. To oversimplify for a moment, if we act friendly to the world, we find that circumstances emerge that reinforce our belief that the world is friendly. Similarly, if we act hostile to the world, we find our perspective justified because events arise that confirm our preconceived notions. When we align with circumstances, circumstances align with us. We can call this flow.â
âFaith in science is explainable by pointing to the laws of cause and effect. A cause may be hidden, yet scientists have faith that there is always a cause to be found. Scientific faith is faith in the process of science. Religious faith is also faith in a process, but that process (as best I understand it, and only in some cases) is attributed to an unknowable god.â
âI view these two concepts, flow and synchronicity, as mutually dependent. In short, when we align with circumstance, circumstance aligns with us. Csikszentmihalyiâs version of flow tells us how to align with circumstance by getting âinto the zone,â and Jungâs version of synchronicity tells us how circumstances align with us when we do that. Together these concepts form my definition of flow.â
đ Cognition of the Bookâs Big Idea:
Through the power of synchronicityâseemingly unrelated events that are actually intricately connectedâyou can begin to receive messages from the cosmos. The phenomena, which has scientific backing, implies that you have control over every conceivable event in a given situation and that you may influence the likelihood of these outcomes by making decisions.
You can also use the idea of flow to improve your life. This is a condition in which you are totally focused on a task at hand and everything appears to be falling into place. You may better handle life's unexpected circumstances and strengthen your connection to flow by using the LORRAX approach.
Another essential component of leading a happy life is authenticity. Your actual self might emerge when you retrain your body to be less reactive to imagined concerns by tackling your ego habits, or the habitual fears that are holding you back. By identifying synchronicity, utilizing flow, and accepting your true self, you'll give yourself the means to live a happy, meaningful life.

The importance of Flow in our work is severely understated. Everything we do, we either do bad, ok or extremely well. To do our jobs well, we need to be in flow. Thatâs hard to do considering how easy it is to get jolted out of flow by a silly interruption. There are stories of developers staying up all night and finishing a recode that normally would of taken weeks, A Manager came up with an idea that would end up saving the company, or an IT guy fixing a server issue by praying the backup was restored despite errors and it did.
With Flow, anything is possible. so why are we not always working towards being there?
