Book Byte #29 "Bored and Brilliant" by Manoush Zomorodi
How Spacing Out Can Unlock Your Most Productive and Creative Self
đŁ Curious Quotes from the Author:
âResearch shows that great artists, scientists, and other types of creators have an abundance of dopamine in their system that allows them to deal with novelty,â Kaufman explained. In other words, they are extra-motivated to seek out the new and can then channel that novelty seeking into being creative. Kaufman calls dopamine âthe mother of inventionâ and explains that because we have a limited amount of it, we must be judicious about choosing to spend it on âincreasing our wonder and excitement for creating meaning and new things like artâŚâ
âWhy is it that you think that technologies are any more distracting than your own mind or anything else in the world?â
âBoredom is the gateway to mind-wandering, which helps our brains create those new connections that can solve anything from planning dinner to a breakthrough in combating global warming.â
âTo think original thoughts, we must put a stop to constant stimulation.â
âBoredom is both a warning that we are not doing what we want to be doing and a âpushâ that motivates us to switch goals and projects.â
đ Cognition of the Bookâs Big Idea:
This book is advocating that we take the time when we are bored to just be bored, meditate and do low dopamine activities to let our minds wander and creativity flow. We should no automatically turn to our smartphones.
đ ď¸Fixing the Tech Industry
The Tech Industry is directly responsible for our Tech Habits. Companies have spent a lot of money finding out what makes us stay on our phones the longest and develop the apps we use everyday to maximize that time. The Idea of the infinite scroll was not invented tilâ social media matured. You couldnât 30 years ago infinite scroll a newspaper or a magazine.
A big part of what this Book Club is about is getting you to pique youâre interest about books. Books are lightyears better for your psyche and counter tech habitual scrolling activities by making you think about the things you read. So Iâll do my best to give you the tools and interest to do so, hopefully i wonât be so boring you got back to your smartphone scrolling after you read this.
