Breadth or Depth?

Many people are interested in a lot of things. You ever met someone who is really good at everything they do? They seem to figure things out quickly and effortlessly while you’re sitting there trying to get the motivation to start that course you paid for months ago?

People have only 2 takes on learning in life:

1: You have the insatiable need to master one thing and one thing only. These are the people who’ve known what they wanted to do their entire lives. They are the ones who became lawyers who loved watching lawyer shows as a kid and debate in debate club. These are the ones who were playing doctor with their stuffed animals when they were 3 years old and would be the first to put a bandaid on ay boo boo. These are the people who specialize.

2: You’re one who scans all the options and has insatiable need for learning, a jack of all trades if you will. These group of people are more mysterious, and coincidentally a lot rarer breed. They identify as learners, they take risks, they get bored easily with things. That’s why they are always looking for something new to learn, and that’s why they are so good at it and seem to do things so effortlessly, because they practice learning something new over and over again. They are usually Neurodivergent, they combine all their knowledge and skills to great outcomes when solving difficult problems. However, they can seem like they aren’t very productive, because the world is built for specialists. You don’t want to trust your health to someone who is still learning, you want the best, and these guys are never the best at any one thing, unless its a position that needs multiple skillsets, like an Entrepreneur.

So I ask you, what do you solve for when you are learning something?

Breadth or Depth?
