If I were to ask you was the #1 Cause of being Burnt Out at work, what do you think it is? Being Underpaid? Overworked? Bad Physical Health, Bad Mental health? Being Ignored? No Promotions?
Well, actually, the #1 Cause of Burnout is: Having a Lack of Impact at Work
Burnout is different than being tired, it is, as Liz Wiseman said “An inexplicable Tiredness”. If you are trying your best to complete your job everyday, and you’re rewarded and recognized for it, you feel successful. If you do that same job and everyone ignores you, no one even verifies your work, you’ll get depressed. Burnout is a sign that what you’re doing no longer has an impact, on your superiors, on your company’s bottom line, even on your own self esteem.
If you’re burned out, the biggest thing you can do to help yourself is to try and make an impact elsewhere if you can’t do it at work. Try a new hobby, write a book or blog, try to do whatever you can, have as big of an impact as you can on other people or other causes.
Writing this newsletter has been the biggest solution for my Career Burnout for over 6 years now. It really is the best way for me to recover from a job where I felt like I had no control or say over my success.
So start by helping someone 1 on 1 and just test out how you feel. My guess is you’ll instantly feel better about yourself for helping that one person solve a problem or just being around for them.
