1 Story from Experience
It was a Friday, I remember because I would buy donuts every Friday for the Helpdesk Team I led. I was dirt poor, working crazy hours, and still, I would pull money out of my own pocket to bring a little cheer to my team who were all overworked and underpaid as I was as we remotely managed the IT Operations of over a 150 Small Businesses in Utah.
Customers would always be calling in extremely angry and only ever in a crisis. Their Systems weren’t working, their exchange server was down, the document they spent all day preparing crashed and when they pulled it back up, it was blank.
What kind of toll do you think those calls took on us? It’s like we were paramedics, except we didn’t get their Hero’s Recognition or the Satisfaction that our job was to save lives, just endless irate customers tell us their server is dead and if you can’t fix it in 5 minutes they are cancelling their support contract.
Instead of saving lives, we save data, restored the standard workflow, and we made their computers whole again. If you are reading this and you pride yourself on how hard a worker you are, don’t fall for the trap of thinking that everything is going to work out with every company you work hard for. It won’t.
Live a life first, then goto work. You are not your Job Title, be proud of your connections you’ve fostered over the years and develop new ones. This is the ultimate currency you should be striving to collect, Connections.
Not Helpdesk Tickets…
2 Ideas From Me
”Maybe we should find a way to enable IT People to develop more connections that are dissociated with their place of work. LinkedIn might have to do for now.”
”Human Connection is hard, it’s way easier to chat or swipe in an app than it is to put yourself out there and talk to someone face to face. Maybe someone should develop an app that you can only swipe left or right when you actually have a face to face conversation first. Call it “Hinder”
3 Quotes from Others
“When using DM’s or Chat in Business, don’t start by saying hi, hello or how are you. Just say what you need in the first message. This is called Clear and Concise Communication and we can all use a little more of it.”
“Ask yourself “What does it Matter to me” the next time you find yourself Judging someone for their clothing or hobbies. The more you train yourself not care about the personal preferences of people, the more relaxed and nicer you become as a person”
“If you think you can, you might be able to, but if you think can’t, you’re 100% correct”
