Start with Emerging Technologies
The best time to start practicing and playing with new technology is now. The more you are familiar and the faster you are at Technologies that seem futuristic, the better your position will be when those Technologies get used on a daily basis.
Cross-Functional Skill Development
By adding skills that are rare but needed among tech professionals, you also gain a huge advantage. This can be skills like writing, communication, soft skills, management even public speaking. The more skills you add to your toolkit, the further ahead you can be.
Industry Vertical Specialization
I think the most lucrative of these skills is specializing in a vertical. Instead of just working in General Technology Companies or IT Fields, follow a path up like in Fintech, EdTech or Healthcare Tech. Knowing how to deal with people in a certain industry is something you can only learn by doing, so trying and stick to a certain subfield will certainly make you more valuable in your career.
