“Culture is not like a mission statement; you can’t just set it up and have it last forever. There’s a saying in the military that if you see something below standard and do nothing, then you’ve set a new standard. This is also true of culture—if you see something off-culture and ignore it, you’ve created a new culture.” -Ben Horowitz (What You Do Is Who You Are)
There’s a famous story about Roy Disney that he would pick up trash while he was walking around Disneyland park and they would ask him why he did that, to which he said “Nobody is too good to pick up trash”.
Leaders have an extra responsibility to those they serve. The employees of a company mirror the kind of examples they see in their leadership. If they cut corners, I’m allowed to cut corners. If they don’t care about customer service, why should I care? When you start to see a difference between how the company says they should act and how they actually act, trust is lost, and it’s very hard to get back, especially from a disgruntled employee.
This also goes for your customers. If they come to you expecting a personality they see in your content, and they don’t get that, they will probably never buy from you. That why being authentic in the content you make is so important. Trust is earned, and if you spent all that time earning it, and you throw it away at the finish line, was it even worth it to begin with?
So be true to yourself and ask the same of your customers. You’ll go a lot farther in Business by doing it that way.
