1 Story from Experience
Once, while working a support job, I got a new boss unexpectedly. She had previously worked with the company's founder and was brought in to manage our department. Right off the bat, she seemed unwelcoming. Within a week, it was clear that her goal was to overhaul our team completely with how much she was micromanaging us.
I suspected they were preparing to sell the company and wanted us looking good for potential buyers - turns out I was right. She managed every aspect of our work closely, was overly critical and just wasn't pleasant at all to work with. From the founder's perspective though, she did an excellent job because they did in fact successfully sold the company.
Afterwards, we were let go as the new owners already had a support team who took over our duties. It felt like she knew we wouldn't like her but didn’t mind since accomplishing her task mattered more.
This experience taught me that employers and employees often have different priorities. While you might think your employer should care about their staff more than anything else, sadly this isn't always true. First Impressions are very important, so make sure if you ever become a manager, that you focus on the people you oversee and make them feel like you’re interested in there welfare. That will do 90% of the work of being a good manager.
2 Ideas from Me
Doing what you love usually comes natural to you, so why don’t more people do it? With the advent of AI, you can get a list of goals needed to achieve anything you want to do in this world, but not someone to do it with? Someone to help you, to encourage you? We need a network of accountability for people who have trouble connecting to other people, because 90% of their issues can be solved with the friendly help of someone else.
Why don’t we have an ubiquitous loyalty points or coupon app or functionality built into our phones? Every restaurant wants their own independent system and it feels like they reset your identity login so that your waiting in the drive thru and end up not using your reward points cause you don’t have time to reinput your credentials. Put coupons directly in Google Maps or Apple Maps. Easy, and chances are you get a bit more business too.
