When something feels off at work, usually it can’t be attributed to one cause. Sure, a problem might arise with a customer or a colleague that could be entirely personal, but if similar instances keep happening, it could have something to do with the interconnected webs of structure, culture, and incentives that cause the behaviors that you are observing.
What feels like a small problem could be a bigger iceberg underneath. This can translate to bigger issues happening down the road, and could affect your career directly. Examples like people Working Hard only when someone’s watching stems from a culture of micromanagement or Innovation getting stifled for the sake of predictively being able to reach financial quota for the quarter.
This affects you too in your own career. If you are noticing that you are getting bored with your work and you do nothing to change it, the cracks will begin to show and your next performance review might not be as great as the last one.
