The Never Ending Resume
Why Projects, not Jobs, will be the most important job placement factors
The world of work is changing. More in the last 5 years than it has done in the past 50 Years. COVID jump-started the process, with many companies needing to go fully remote to survive, years of corporate beuraucuy and entrancehd leadership thought business should be one way, butts in seats, 9am-5pm in a cubicle for maximum efficiency.
When companies were forced to survive with remote work, it changed something in the ethos of the workday. Flexibility was the problem most solved for. Whatever gave them more flexibility to pick up their kids from school, or being in a Video Chat rather than in person meetings becoming the norm, each step towards remote possibilities was the average worker, who’s been underpaid for decades, was their way of taking back their time and mental health.
It’s pretty obvious why there’s such vitriol and sentiment against Return-to-office mandates. They’ve won back their freedom, and they don’t want to give it up. Now with the advent of Ai in the coming years, it’s only going to get harder for people to be enticed back into the office. Being able to run everything you do and more via Ai while trying to be there for your family, it’s just feels like the right direction.
What will probably happen is companies won’t need as much headcount as they did previously, plus we won’t need managers because Ai is a better manager than any manager ever would be. We might be more like contractors, working from project to project, and our resumes might look more about what have you done for humanity more than what have you done for Corporations.
