The Purple Cow Principle

In regard to engaging with Social Media

The Famous Author Seth Godin came up with this principle. He talks about while you’re driving and you see some cows, you don’t pay much attention. But if you saw a purple cow, that would get you to look and pay attention.

The attention economy is a battleground. Many people want your attention. Influencers, Advertisers and even the Platforms themselves. People have to do crazier and crazier things to get people’s attention. But honestly, all you have to do is plop a purple cow down in front of them.

You just need to be creative enough and different enough to get their attention. You don’t have to do something extremely risky, dangerous or illegal. All you have to do is appeal to their need for all things new. But most don’t want to do the creative work, they want the shortcuts, so they’ll upload as many prank videos as they need to. (Does it really feel like a shortcut if you have to serve tons of slop to get anywhere?)

Moral of the story, if you want to capture attention, be different, but not like psychotic different, ok?
