What People Get Wrong about Specialization

When we talk about specialization in careers, it can be very lucrative. The Neurologist gets paid very well for his expertise on the Brain. But the more you worship the act of specializing, the more your curiosity dwindles. Humans are innately curious. We have curiosity built into us as a child, and we slowly let it drain away as we get older because we need to pay the bills.

But Specialization is possible without having to do only one thing for the rest of your life. The solution to that problem is to “Be About” one thing your entire life. You should have one “Theme” that your work life revolves around. That Neurology Specialist can be about “How Our Brain Functions to Connect with other”. He can write books, start communities, make a podcast, start a foundation, teach or guest speak at a college there are tons of things he can do other than just seeing patients with Neurological Disorders.

You can do the same with your Tech Career. You don’t need to be pigeonholed as a Cisco Engineer for the rest of your life. You can research new technologies in networking, start you’re own company, start a certification YouTube channel. You can explore many different experiments within your realm of Genius and still benefit from being a specialist, you just have to do more things outside your comfort zone. This is how you grow as a specialist.

Until Tomorrow,
