1 story from experience
At some point, perhaps during the industrial revolution, we found out that subsidizing labor with machines became the secret to success. In today’s world most jobs rely on what I call “Farming 1’s and 0‘s”.
Or as most people call them, Desk Jobs.
We support the infrastructure needed to make sure those “Farmers” can do their jobs. We all earn money to put food on our tables and a roof over our heads, and if you’re not careful, it can quickly become the sole important effort of one’s life. Having a Family meant providing for said family (if you were a decent human being). You’d then proceed to spend 8-10 hours a day away from that family providing for that family.
This wasn’t how it was pre-industrial revolution. Most people were farmers, the family worked together on the farm all day every day. Fast forward to today, if IT jobs can be done remotely (Let’s face it, Cloud Hardware Permanence has allowed us to easily work remotely now), we can work at home with our families, just like we did on the Farm.
If the feeble minded executives want to make you come back into the Office, I’d suggest finding another job. Any executive of a company who announces that is surely not any adaptable executive you want to follow or work under, their days are numbered in the Digital Future to come.
So lets help our fellow bit farmers out, help keep their systems running smoothly and try to find a balance between work, friends and family, and our own mental and physical health. You’ll be a lot happier about life, I guarantee it.
2 Ideas from Me
We need more MSP’s that are built around solopreneurs or partnerships. People want that hometown touch when they need help with their systems but can’t normally afford a whole IT department all the time. Cloud Computing and SaaS have kind of taken over. Why have a system built for you and have to support it when you can just buy Microsoft 365 or spin up a Slack server. A lot of small business can use the Systems help, even contracting yourself out can be hugely beneficial to your pocketbook.
Locally Produced Meal Prep Kits. I hate cooking, but I want to eat healthy. I’ll spend 10 Bucks easy on a Combo Meal, but I can’t easily buy a decently priced prepped meal from a local chef out of his house or ghost kitchen?
