People tell me all the time that Professional Networking is hard. They say they can’t give it the time it needs for real relationships to blossom. But as I tell everyone who asks that same question, it’s not about the difficulty, it’s about consistency. If you don’t nurture the seed, if you don’t take care of the plant that is your external work type relationships, then they will die.

We all lead busy lives. Busy is a lie we tell ourselves. We won’t be “Busy” when we get laid off unexpectedly and we find our Hard Work Ethic meant nothing to the Company we gave our soul to. At that moment, we are going to need that support from our Professional Community, and if you don’t nurture those relationships now, you won’t have them when you need them .

So I’d suggest you join any community you can. A Software Dev Community, a DevOps Community, even a Cisco Based Community. It doesn’t matter what it is, only that it’s based around something you’re interested in and has some sort of professional connection to allow yourself to easily network within your industry.
